ROKSANDA on what it means to dress a woman well
Two decades into building one of fashion’s most distinctive labels, Roksanda Ilinčić shows no signs of slowing down. We caught up with the London-based designer at our Washington D.C. shopping event benefiting Women for Women International to tap into the brand’s heart, the women who wear it and why she believes that great fashion is far more powerful than the garment itself.

ROKSANDA is a beloved luxury label. What’s an early decision you made that defined the brand?
I wanted ROKSANDA to be about a particular perspective on femininity—one that embraces strength and softness, confidence and vulnerability. Color, sculptural shapes and a sense of artistic freedom have always been central to that vision. Having the courage to protect that identity, while allowing the brand to evolve naturally, is what has made it so distinctive.

They come from different worlds, have different experiences and use their voices in very different ways, but I think they share a certain independence of spirit. When a woman chooses ROKSANDA, it is an enormous privilege. It reminds me that fashion can be a deeply personal form of expression.

The industry is having a long-overdue reckoning with sustainability, diversity and responsibility. What’s your role in that?
I’ve always been interested in making pieces that women can continue to love beyond a single season. Diversity is equally important because women are not one-dimensional, and fashion should reflect the extraordinary breadth of their identities, bodies, experiences and ambitions. Independent brands have an opportunity to challenge established conventions and to demonstrate that creativity and responsibility can exist together.

Why does Olivela’s belief that fashion & philanthropy strengthen each other resonate with you?
The idea of connecting the beauty and craftsmanship of luxury with meaningful impact feels very natural to me, because it allows the act of choosing something special to become part of a more conscious exchange. This partnership is about shared values: believing in the power of women, in the importance of opportunity and in the possibility of using creativity and business as forces for good.
