Why is addressing the issue of fashion waste so important to you?
ERS: “The supply chain is broken. Factories demand high minimums to get lower prices, and that results in over-production. Retailers then have to move unsold inventory, which sees items being discounted and ultimately, discarded. It's created a poisonous cycle where we push manufacturers for lower prices, too much product is then in circulation and at the end of the season, those garments end up in landfills. It’s time to change the narrative and provide consumers with a more thoughtful choice.”
What makes Careste designs sustainable?
ERS: “We manufacture to order, and that piece is made with the utmost care, one at a time, and is made to last. Our hope is that Careste's collection comprises pieces that can be worn again and again. Easy, adaptable favorites that complement any wardrobe, made from natural fibers that can ultimately return to the earth.”

How can supporting girls' education help combat climate change?
ERS: “Education is the most important thing we can provide for girls. Knowledge is power, and it allows girls to make better choices. Education provides girls with more agency and will empower them economically. If a girl is permitted to complete her education, she will return the investment back to her community. The well-being of others improves as a result. Gender inequality and climate change are not separate challenges.”
CM: “Education is everything. To quote Maya Angelou, ‘When you know better, you do better.’”
What lessons have you learned as female founders?
CM: “That building a business is a marathon, with many highs and lows along the way. There is no such thing as an overnight success, and oftentimes if something seems too good to be true, it probably is.”
