Where does your eye for fashion come from?
To me, it’s not so much about fashion, but more about creating something beautiful. When I was little, whether I wanted a skirt or a lamp, I created it myself. I guess I got that from my mother—she is very inspiring in many ways, but above all she has taught me that with imagination, creativity and grit you can do almost anything.

How do you encapsulate and push the boundaries of Scandi style?
Scandinavian style is somewhat equivalent to clean lines and neutral color palettes, and By Malene Birger encapsulates that to some extent. However, I would say that in our designs and as a brand we are less conservative and strict in how we approach dressing. I hope we are seen as warm, feminine and with a touch of escapism sprinkled here and there.

Where do you find inspiration?
My absolute go-to when it comes to inspiration is vintage pieces and flea markets. Whenever I’m traveling, either for work or for pleasure, I try to find time to visit one or two gems that I’ve pinned throughout the years. Besides that, I’m very into Pinterest and can sit for hours collecting images. And let’s not forget my very inspiring friends!

How have you approached designing the latest collection?
My goal is always to capture a feeling of freshness, but for SS24 I was thinking specifically about vacations in the Mediterranean. A woman crossing a piazza, sitting on the terrace of an old stone villa overlooking the ocean... I was thinking about the importance of relaxation, the feel of soft, natural fabrics against your skin, and easy kaftans and co-ordinating items offset with more dressed-up pieces you might wear out to dinner.

What’s your must-have for 2024?
I wear kaftan-style dresses pretty much all year round, and I love the white textured linen style in this collection—it’s such a useful piece that can be thrown over a bikini, or styled with the gold chain-link necklace to look glamorous in the evening. The crinkle fabric also means it can be chucked into a suitcase without having to worry about creases.
