Why are leather alternatives so important to you?
We can’t keep exploiting the world’s natural resources and animals. Many think leather is sustainable, but that’s not really true. Plus, most shoes are 80% plastic, which isn’t biodegradable. I wanted to address the idea of technology in fashion because it seems to be the only industry that’s held back in terms of innovating new materials. I set out to prove that you can have luxury shoes designed in Italy without using leather. I hope that it shifts the conversation on what sustainability looks like, particularly to the luxury customer.

How do you challenge the perception of vegan footwear?
By focusing on design. The first reason you buy Piferi shoes is because you like the look of them. Then the responsibility of it comes after, not because it's a secondary thought but because it should be a given.

What inspires you?
Real people inspire me. Living in London and seeing the different ways people dress means I’m constantly inspired. We are quite broad in that we want to fit into many different women’s wardrobes and design for many occasions and outfits.

How do you want a woman to feel in Piferi shoes?
I don’t like to say empowered because I don’t think a woman needs a pair of shoes to feel empowered. But I want her to walk confidently and to feel some sort of aesthetic power when she wears a Piferi shoe.
