Designers Doing Good
Sana Jardin

Sana Jardin, the world’s first socially-conscious, luxury fragrance house, beautifully unites its founder’s two life-long passions. Amy Christiansen Si-Ahmed has a background in social work dedicated to economic and social justice, and she loves fragrance. Created by IFF Master Perfumer Carlos Benaim using the highest concentrations of naturally perfumed essential oils, the collection itself is unparalleled. And just as integral to the company’s mission—tackling the problem of waste in the supply chain while providing year-round economic opportunities to the harvesters. CEW UK recently recognized the company’s efforts with its Eco Beauty Award.

“When I imagine the future, sustainability becomes good business, and commerce and good business becomes sustainable.”

Economic Empowerment

The rose, jasmine and orange blossom harvests provide only seasonal employment for the women of the indigenous Amazigh community in north west Morocco. Sana Jardin, along with partners Nest, a non-profit that supports artisan communities, and Les Aromes du Maroc, an international floral ingredient supplier, developed a program to improve the lives of these women. The Beyond Sustainability™ Movement teaches the female harvesters how to use the flower recycling to create their own scented candles and orange blossom water. As a collective, the female harvesters sell these products under the label, Annamaa, retaining all the profits. Any additional waste is upcycled into organic compost, making it a low waste, closed loop process.

The Impact & Future

After just six months of operation, the founding members of the collective saw significant jumps in their income. Christiansen Si-Ahmed now plans to take the program to other countries, including India and Indonesia. “We’d love to be a beacon of light in the luxury fashion industry, and set the tone for not only fragrance but food, beauty, fashion and manufacturing brands going forward, proving that social change and luxury do not have to be mutually exclusive,” she says.

“Consumers were ready for a quality, non-toxic product while wanting to be instigators of change with their purchase. I realized Sana Jardin could empower everyone from harvester to consumer.”
