My daily ritual includes …
First thing in the morning, I cook a meal for my Yorkie, Tipsy. She is getting old and is my baby, and I would do anything for her. I cook her a two-egg chicken omelet with a dash of fish oil, which does her for breakfast and dinner. Smells good actually.
I am grateful for...
My wife, who is not only the love of my life, but also my business partner and best friend. She makes me laugh every day and her positive energy makes me feel younger than when I first met her, over 20 years ago. She still jumps up and greets me with a smile and hug every time I come home.
I often take for granted...
Traveling. I’m a homebody and travel a lot for business, so I am always reluctant each time my wife plans a trip to some exotic place. She has made it our mission to visit remote less, well-known cultures and environments before they lose their original essence and beauty. It is one of the most enriching things we do.
I wish more people could feel...
More joy in their lives and the pleasure of bringing joy to others. I believe that there would be more peace in our world if more people felt this way.
My favorite way to give includes …
A big smile. Doesn’t it make you feel better when someone simply smiles at you? Smiling at a stranger is a gift that they can pay forward. Imagine how much happier we would be if we all received one extra smile each day.
If I could walk someone else’s path, it would have to be…
Uphill! No point in following unless it is a challenge. Otherwise, I’ll make my own path. Actually, I only ever make my own path.
My favorite term of endearment is…
Hon-bun.
The easiest way to connect with others is …
A smartphone? Er, I guess I should be more profound. How about listening? But a smartphone helps there too, right?
The biggest misconception about fashion is …
There is no such thing as “one size fits all." Designers too often design for the “perfect” body or foot or shape. The fact is that fashion should be individual to each person based on what best suits their size and shape, not something cookie-cutter.
My personal passion is…
I have many passions. It depends on where I am and what I’m into in any moment. Collecting antiquities has obsessed me in the past. A few months ago, I was into audio equipment. Now I’m getting involved in golf. Next month, it will be something completely different. Perhaps my passion is a hunger for new experiences and always learning something different.
My biggest truth is…
Who I am and what I believe in. I have great difficulty being or doing what others expect. I may be a maverick, but at least I’m true to myself.
My golden rule is…
To understand a problem carefully before attempting to solve it.
One cause I wish everyone knew about…
The preservation of traditional cultures and artistry. Every country we visit opens my eyes to the precious crafts and handiwork that are in peril of disappearing with the homogenizing of the world. It has been my personal mission to revive the ancient art of working in pure gold, and I am so gratified to see how new generations of craftspeople have embraced this. If only we could see the same happen in other traditional art forms so that the legacy of our human past could be preserved for posterity.

When I think sustainability, I imagine...
“A world in which each individual takes personal responsibility for doing their part. It is not enough that organizations, governments and charities put in place programs. It has to come from each of us.”
