Designers Doing Good
John Hardy

In 1975, Canadian artist John Hardy fell in love with Bali. Inspired by its landscape and awed by the artisans making handcrafted pieces there, he helped form them into a collective. The goal: to share their work with the wider world and to ensure their techniques would live on. Today, that community still exists, working in an open-air studio in the beautiful and sustainably- built Ubud Design Studio and Workshop in Bali (shown here). Now led by Creative Director Hollie Bonneville Barden, that collaboration continues to grow to this day, rooted in the company's essential values of community, artisanship and sustainability.

“My mission in life is to make businesses not only a source of economic success, but a force for positive change in the world.”

The Artisans

Chain-weaving, hand-hammering of precious metals, and intricately carved scenes of nature were traditions of the Balinese Royal Court and most often used in the decoration of sacred objects. Today, they form the basis of John Hardy designs. Each piece is created by hand using an eight-step process that goes from sketch to the hand setting of gems. Through its Jobs For Life program, the techniques used are not only kept alive, but passed down, stabilizing communities and families by making sure they have steady work. “In some cases, our artisans are third and fourth generation John Hardy employees and our workshop is an integral part of their community,” says Hanson.

The Environment

All gems are ethically sourced, and whenever possible, the company uses 100% reclaimed silver and gold. It is also working to offset its carbon footprint through the Wear Bamboo, Plant Bamboo initiative. For each purchase made from the Bamboo Collection, bamboo seedlings are planted. As of August 2017, the company had planted one million seedlings in Bali.

“It is encouraging that people are increasingly informed about how their consumption impacts our environment, social and economic systems; they are becoming more conscious consumers.”
